Slate magazine has published an article about how US war veterans are finding that death metal helps them recover from their horrific injuries. The Walter Reed medical centre has partnered with Musicorps to provide the injured, and often deeply depressed, vets with one-on-one intensive music therapy sessions. The musician in residence programme teaches the soldiers to play, which gives them a goal to strive towards and a sense of achievement not found in usual ‘therapy’ sessions.
