The Living Dead

Ex-CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite is said to gravely ill with cerebrovascular disease according to his family, and the  media have been preparing their obituaries and the untimely death of Michael Jackson has had TV channels scrambling to produce tributes. I recently a cramped taxi ride through the Atlas mountains with an off-duty British Marine who described how full dress rehearsals of the Queen’s state funeral are regularly held at the dead of night through the streets of central London. Who decides when it’s appropriate to start rehearsing for an event that might be imminent, sudden or not happen for decades? And who do they decide deserves to be prior-obituated?
