The laugh track was first used (in the USA, at least) on radio programmes in the 1940s, before migrating to TV. Later, speeded up whistling and applause tracks were popular on 1970s programmes. Later still, the laugh track became more casual and then disappeared altogether on shows such as office. Read more of the unofficial history of the laugh track.
