Independent Lens: Soul Food Junkies – Filmmaker Byron Hurt sets out to learn more about soul food and its relevance to black cultural identity. As he discovers, the relationship between African Americans and high-fat, calorie-rich traditional dishes such as ribs, grits and fried chicken is culturally based, deeply rooted, complex and often deadly. Soul Food Junkies puts this culinary tradition under the microscope to examine its positive and negative consequences.
