The Big Dig WW1: Revealed w/t (1 x 45′) – Messines is one of World War One’s most iconic Battlefields. Between 1914 and 1918 the Allies and the Germans fought for control of Messines – taking, losing, and re-taking this strategic ground. The fighting culminated in the Battle of Messines in which 600 tons of explosives took the lives of 10,000 men. In 2012 it has been excavated for the first time. In March this year archaeologists began the dig, the route of which is over a mile long. A military excavation of this scale comes up only once in a decade. The project also included extensive weapons clearance – the shells and bombs just as deadly now as they were one hundred years ago. The sheer size of the excavation combined with the dramatic story of the battle makes for a truly compelling film.
