Brian Dettmer, a Chicago-based artist, specializes in making intricate sculptures out of the pages of old medical books, dictionaries and encyclopedias. He doesn’t remove the pages, preferring instead to use the constraints of the covers and the illustrations contained within the book, never adding new elements. He dissects each book using surgical tools, working one page at a time. The results are truly extraordinary.
