Greenlit: Chess Records, BBC4

Chess Records (1×60′) – This documentary commemorates the 60th anniversary of American record label, Chess Records.

Based in Chicago, Illinois, the artists on this iconic blues, rock ‘n’ roll; R&B and soul label radically shaped the musical landscape of the second half of the 20th century.

Run by Polish immigrant brothers Leonard and Phil Chess, the company produced and released recordings by every major blues performer, from John Lee Hooker to Muddy Waters. If it wasn’t for the extraordinary blasts of innovation from Howlin’ Wolf, Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy, Etta James and other Chess luminaries, music today just might not have been the same.
