Hairdressers to the Rescue – How to Clean Up an Oil Spill

An astonishing 370,000 pounds of hair, and 300,000 pounds of fur, a day are clipped, cut and shorn from human and pet salon customers in the US alone. Non-profit organisation Matter of Trust collects the hair for its Hair for Oil Spills programme, which sends hair to areas affected by environmentally disastrous oil spills, such as the current Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The hair is good at soaking up and removing the oil to a place where it can be broken down by worms, among other means. Read more on the BBC website.
