  1. My home is 3 years old. It has an open floor plan with living room, dining room and kitchen all in one big space. It is a nice home, but my kitchen is so boring. It does not have an island but is a large kitchen. My husband and I both cook and wish the kitchen was different but do not know what to do. Help !

We started on our kitchen. However, we ran short on funds. We had to fire our carpenter, now we ( I ) have to do things on our own. But, I don’t have the courage to do things because I am afraid I will mess up bad and waste material. We did knock out a wall and rearrange the kitchen into a u shape. Took out north windows and close the wall up.
We need help. Could you help us. (me.)

  4. James, I HATE MY KITCHEN!!! We are a 5 person household of 3 teenagers and 2 adults. Pretty much only 1 person can enter our kitchen at a time. I have very litte cabinet and counter space. The design is out dated from the 70′s and the cabinet doors have a mind of their own. My husband gets sent overseas every other 6 months, so we dare not start a project I can’t even begin to think I can do on my own. Is there any hope for us?

  13. PLEAS HELP!!!

I love my house but absolutelty HATE my kitchen! We live in North Florida and we entertain alot when family comes to visit. The problem is that my kitchen is an eat in L shaped kitchen, however only one person can be in the actual “kitchen” area at one time. We have wanted to bump out the wall to make the area larger but are deathly afraid of the doing the project ourselves. My husband is in the Navy and goes on deployment often for six months at a time and this leaves me alone to do most of the home projects myself. I have had 43 reconstructive surgeries and transplants resulting from a car accident in 1987 in which my face was crushed. I have had all the bones in my face replaced with titanium so I have trouble getting things done by myself. My husband has spent countless hours sitting up right in a chair beside my hospital bed, waited hours on end during my many many surgeries. I would really like to do something amazing to help him. I am a very proud woman and my doctors are asthonished at how well I do, but I know that I can not let my disabilities get the best of me so I keep going through all the pain, the fatique and the depression. I would really like help with my kitchen, because my kitchen is the heart of my home with my family. There are many things I can no longer do but cooking and feeding my faimly is not one of them. My kitchen brings my family together. Please help me?

  14. First of all, my husband/fixer upper, did not tell me about your TV show, he knew I would start to tear out our kitchen and he would be in for a job that would take professional help to complete correctly. Our house is old, really in need of an upgrade. We have painted over our paneled walls, have one window that only cools off a corner of the kitchen, and really out dated appliances. My husband is retired and he and his crew, will have plenty of time to (assist) your crew, and at the same time, do something he can be very proud of. Please help, I am ready to start ripping out the walls as we speak. have a great day.. ps the show was pretty cool, I enjoyed watching.

  15. James — I have watched several of your kitchen makeover programs and I just want to tell you that I love what you do with those kitchens. I absolutley HATE my kitchen. We have recently renovated most of our house, except of course, the kitchen, which is where I spend most of my time. I love to cook and it bothers me that my kitchen is not very user friendly, not much counter space at all and needs definately needs some improvement. I would love to be selected for one of you kitchen renovations and I am not opposed from getting involved in the work. Thank you so much for your great ideas.

  21. Dear James,
I must admit I have only seen your show once, but that was all I needed to convince me “You Are The MAN”. Your ideas for remodeling a smaller kitchen which I have, all while keeping costs down are nothing short of genius!! We would love to have you over to check out our peeling floors, peach counter-tops and chipping cabinets and maybe a home cooked meal too.
    Sincerely,
    Brigette

  22. Dear James

You are amazing! And I know you will get a kick out of helping my husband and I come to terms with a budget worthy kitchen makeover. JB and I are young professional AA couple living in Rochester, NY. Which was rated the #1 best city to live in. For years we have been both so focused on our careers, that our house has functioned more like a dorm. Now I’m ready to turn my kitchen into a place where greatness starts and cut out the “Take Out” mentality we’ve adopted for the past three years. Please here our story. I’m happy to send pictures.

Daisyland: This is the coin name for my horrific kitchen design. In 2006, we were in the market to purchase our first home. JB wanted a community that he could invest in. I really wanted to live out my childhood dream of having a fabulous kitchen! My mother taught me everything I know about cooking. Growing up, we used to have huge lavish holiday dinners where half of the family congregated in the kitchen and contributed to the cooking experience. However, when she died, I lost the passion to cook. After I got married, I thought that maybe having a dreamy kitchen was going to be my big come back! So when my husband and I were shopping for our dream house, I knew it had to have an awesome kitchen!

One evening while we were driving around the 19th ward in Rochester, NY we saw a bright yellow house with beautiful windows and two weeping cherry trees and decided to take a closer look. We walked into the house and immediately fell in love with the hardwood floors and open floor plan. The house was glowing with natural light. But, then I saw a different kind of grotesque light as I approached, the double doors leading to the kitchen. My mouth dropped in disgust by the most outlandish and tacky YELLOW tone and tribute to sunflowers & daisies from the daisy paneling, curtains and brown dated linoleum flooring. On the left wall, hung an old steel fixture playing double duty as a fan. All the appliances were outdated and lack flow and functionality, particularly when going from the sink to the stovetop. There was a small portable dishwasher that sat exactly 90 degrees away from the sink, but ironically needed to be connected to the sink for it to work! The outdated electric stove had only one oven, not ideal for planning large dinners, and the brown steel hood chirped like you were cooking up a live bird when you turn it on. All the cupboards were cutouts from the actual wall and the façade was painted the atrocious yellow tone with checkered wallpapering & spin-master seasoning drawers inside. I turned around to look for JB to let him know I met the Dealbreaker, and saw him already outside talking with the neighbors across the street…

The BIG compromise: I was in a conundrum because I couldn’t say no to his excitement, but I couldn’t say yes to that damn crazy kitchen! So we agreed that we would redo the kitchen immediately after we moved in. And since I love construction, it was an easy sell for him. His nickname for me is “Joseph” (a bible reference) because I love carpentry work. Unfortunately, 4 years and a recession later, the kitchen looks exactly the same and is the point of contention in our home.

So in conclusion, I am convinced that I have the UGLIEST kitchen in America, situated in the best neighborhood in America. There is so much we can do with the space, we just need an expert eye to make daisyland fit for the modern grown up professional couple looking for a cool, efficient and stylish décor that we can invite others into! Please please please help!!!

    Sincerely,
    NanaEfua (35Y) and JB Afoh-Manin (40Y)

  23. I could really use some help, we just purchased a home, I don’t even know when it was built, I am guessing 1950′s, from the paneling. Love the scalope look, but went from a kitchen with 42 cabnets and drawers to a kitchen with 13 cabnets and 4 drawers, open floor plan, room for expantion with little trouble, don’t have to take out walls or anything like that. For Pete’s sake, I can’t even have my knife set sit upright, have to lay on it’s side, the cabnets are so low, even the cookie jar had to be relocated! The sink, though stainless is so small, my large boiling pots barely fit, I feel like i’m in my pop up camper. Have renovated many of my past homes, but this is our retirement home. My husband is a wounderful handyman, but because he’s an aircraft mech. I have to keep reminding him “not everything is an airplane” Please Help, I’m gettting to old to do this kind of stuff myself. :)

  25. I really hate my future daughter-in-laws kitchen. A kitchen on a boat has more room. Reawlly you can not have two kitchenh in the kitchen and if by chance you do you have to move out to open the refrigator. The cabints that hang down above counter; my hands itch to rip them out of the celling. It would not bother me to destroy the pre hung celing. Add to that behind the refrigator you have to use the hard cardboard piece of 4×6 magnit piece to go behind the it to turn lights off and on that are that clear celing tile that houses the light. Its like being in a cave. “i’m 60 but believe me I would work dasy anhd night to change this obnizious kitchen that could be so much more!
