Women Conductors on the Rise

Variety has noticed a small but growing trend towards women conductors. Female conductors have traditionally been as rare as hens’ teeth, but now people such as JoAnn Falletta (Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra), Marin Alsop (Baltimore Symphony Orchestra) and Keri-Lynn Wilson (who has played with the Bavarian State Opera) are beginning to make some headway, but still fewer than 12% of American orchestras are led by a woman, so there’s still a lot of work to do.
