Every year 24 outstanding US citizens are awarded MacArthur ‘genius’ grants of $500,000 over five years that they can use at their discretion. Winners are confidentially nominated and know nothing of the process until they receive a call telling them they’ve been selected. This years lucky recipients include an ornithologist, an evolutionary biologist, a biogeochemist and a writer who has investigated a number of unresolved murders, which has resulted in the imprisonment of one of the perpetrators of a Klu Klux Klan killing.
