Greenlit: Soul of a People: Writing America’s Story, Smithsonian Channel

Soul of a People: Writing America’s Story (2×60′) – HD documentary that tells the story of the Great Depression and the Federal Writers Project programme, which employed 6,600 of jobless writers including Saul Bellow and Studs Terkel, to produce a set of state guidebooks. But the writers went off message when they wrote about the hardships faced by ordinary Americans; they managed to provide an acute portrait of 1930s USA. The documentary is based on David A Taylor’s book, Soul of a People, and is narrated by actress Patricia Clarkson.
