Field Guide to: Presenter-Led Documentary Series

An expert, often an academic, leads us through a subject, synthesizing all the arguments, simplifying the subject so it’s easy to understand.

The defining feature is that the story could be told without the presenter being present; in international versions the original presenter is usually edited out and replaced with a voice-over narration.

This approach is often used for specialist factual documentary series – art, religion, history and science.

· Earth: Power of the Planet / Earth: The Biography (BBC1 / National Geographic)

· The Human Body (BBC1 / Discovery)

· Heston Blumenthal’s In Search of Perfection (BBC2)
